XCSoar is world champion!
( 5. Feb 2013 by Helmut)

Club class winners, WGC Argentina 2012

Congratulations to XCSoar user and contributor Santiago Berca for winning the 32nd FAI World Gliding Championship in the club class!! The XCSoar community really had a close eye on what happened in Argentina those days. We are pleased to see XCSoar on that high level in action.

Our best wishes go to the whole Argentinian team that also managed to win in the world class. The winner in the standard class is once again Sebastian Kawa, whom we also want to congratulate.

Read on Santi’s story in this little interview with Turbo.

Turbo: Why did you choose to use XCSoar?

Santi: This is my story: I wanted a software with a better support for AAT tasks. Javier Gaude (my team-mate in the last championships) started to experiment with LK8000, and told me that the feature of the optimized turn points inside the area was great. So I tried it too. But I didn’t like the user interface. In the mean time I found XCSoar, and that it had a similar feature for AAT tasks. Since I have some knowledge in programming I took a look to both codes (LK and XCS) and it seemed to me that LK was more difficult to understand (and debug). I really liked the coding style of XCSoar and I guessed that it would be easier to me to add a new feature if needed. So I tried it. It took me a while to get used to the user interface, but after some configuration it became my main navigation software and I convinced Javier to switch to it too.

Turbo: On what device(s) are you using XCSoar?

Santi: In Uvalde I used it on an oudie (don’t tell Naviter ;) ) and in Chaves on an Ipaq 5550, connected to a CAI 302. My team-mate use it on a Chinese PNA.

Turbo: How many other pilots/teams were using XCSoar on the WGC?

Santi: Three pilots from Argentina (including me). Don’t know about other teams.

Turbo: How do you think does the software compare to its competitors?

Santi: I think it’s better than competitors.

Turbo: How did XCSoar help you during the WGC?

Santi: It helped me a lot, in very different ways, but in my opinion the AAT task support is one of the best features it has. Thermal assistant is very useful in some situations too.

Turbo: How did you configure XCSoar? (important infoboxes, map display configuration, etc.)

Santi: I use it portrait, with 8 infofoxes on top so the thermal assistant don’t cover any infobox.

In cruise and Final Glide mode: - WP Dist / WP AltD / Alt. Baro/ MC - T Next Leg / V Gnd / AAT Time / V MC

In Circling mode: - WP Dist / WP AltD / Alt. Baro/ MC - T Next Leg / Fin ETE / AAT Time / TC Avg

Aux-1: - AAT Dmin / AAT Dtgt / AAT Dmax / VTask Avg - Fin ETA / Start Height / Fin ETE / Fin ETE VMG

Note: I used a slightly modified version of XCSoar where I combined “AAT Dmin” with “AAT Vmin” in a single infobox, as well as “AAT Dmax” with “AAT Vmax”. I used the third line of the infobox to display AAT Vmin/max.

On page 1 I have “Map and InfoBoxes (Auto)”, and on page 2 “Aux-1”. That’s all.

I use Track up always, circling zoom on (very nice feature!). I don’t use Auto MC, I prefer to set it manual in the 302. - Wind drift prediction Off. - Auto wind: Circling. (I have the feeling that circling is more accurate than ZigZag) - External Wind: Off

In Uvalde I had the terrain on, but in Chaves I turned it off to have better contrast in the screen. Topology always on.

I also use a custom menu that I found very useful. Take a look to “mi_menu.xci” attached.

Turbo: Do you use a Flarm and did you have it connected to XCSoar? Do you have any other devices connected to XCSoar?

Santi: No, I don’t have Flarm. I wish I had, it seems very well integrated to XCS. I have it connected to the 302 vario only.

Turbo: What features would you like to see in future versions of XCSoar?

Santi: Not sure. It seems to have everything I need.

Turbo: What do you like best and what do you hate about XCSoar?

Santi: AAT features are very good. I don’t really hate anything in XCSoar, but since you asked, I had some problems with the wind calculation. I am not sure when it happens and don’t know how to reproduce it, that’s why I didn’t send any bug report. It is one thing that I was investigating in the code. As soon as I have time I promise to take a look at this.

XCSoar 6.5_alpha1 released!
(28. Jan 2013 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

About half a year ago we released XCSoar 6.4 and now it is time for the next chapter: XCSoar 6.5. This is not the real deal yet, but with this release we would like to give you a preview of the things that are coming in the near future. Please test this version carefully and let us know if you find any bugs or have other things you want to tell us about!

Here is a short overview of what has changed compared to XCSoar 6.4:

  • basic support for drawing FAI triangle areas
  • high-resolution terrain rendering for Android devices
  • possibility to show a task start countdown
  • optimized racing tasks (minimum distance)
  • support for built-in pressure sensors on the IOIO board (BMP085 and MS5611)
  • the FLARM radar is no longer hiding the infoboxes and only replaces the map
  • better default fonts for the lists and infoboxes
  • thermal assistant infobox

and maybe most important:

These are only the most visible changes. You can find more information about everything that changed in our changelog:

XCSoar 6.4.6 released!
(23. Jan 2013 by Turbo)

Merry christmas and a happy new year!

This is the first new release of XCSoar this year and it fixes a few minor bugs in all different places:

  • Several device drivers were updated, including Leonardo, C-Probe and the Glidertools Altimeter
  • On some WinCE devices the serial port caused a lockup when the application was closed, which should be fixed now. (Thanks for that to our new developer Stefan Lofgren)
  • The airspace file parser has received a bit of our time to make it more robust. It is now even able to handle the complicated airspace structure around Syracuse in the United States.

There were a few more fixes and you can read about the rest in our change log:

XCSoar 6.4.5 released!
(14. Dec 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

One month after the last release we’ve fixed a few more minor bugs and are ready to release the next (and hopefully last) maintenance release for XCSoar 6.4.

Triadis customers might be happy to hear that the MacCready setting of the Vega vario is handled properly now and the XCSoar checklist dialog is now scrollable on the Altair again.

Apart from that we have added a polar for the LAK-12 glider and have fixed a bug in the task engine that could produce rounding errors for certain tasks.

One user located in Helsinki made us aware that a “broken” map file could potentially crash the application when loaded and we’ve fixed that problem now too.

XCSoar 6.4.4 released!
(15. Nov 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

A few bugs have been fixed in the last two weeks and we felt that it was time for another maintenance release. Feel free to update your devices to XCSoar 6.4.4 if these fixes are important to you.

Some Android devices had problems with the font rendering, and after one of our users was kind enough to send his devices over for testing we could finally fix this problem. We hope that fixing it on his device (Archos 101) will also improve the situation on other devices with a similar graphics chip.

For quite some time now our wind-related infobox panels were missing the button to change the infobox contents. We are sorry that we didn’t fix it earlier but now you can use that panel like any other too.

The Altair users will be happy to hear that we fixed the behavior of the Escape key, after breaking it in a previous release without noticing it.

These are only the pilots using the Android version though. There is also still a significant number of pilots using XCSoar on other platforms like the Triadis Altair and Windows Mobile in general.

We hope to continue this upward trend in the next year with new features coming soon. We are currently finishing the next maintenance release (XCSoar 6.4.2) and after that we will publish the first early preview version of the upcoming XCSoar 6.5.

We are also working hard on the SkyLines platform and we hope to bring you the terrain elevation data for your flights very soon. In addition to all that, I am working on a tracking client for the iPhone users out there. It has the simple purpose of sending your position in regular intervals to the SkyLines server, so that other people can follow your flights live on the map.

XCSoar 6.4.1 released!
(30. Aug 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

One month after we’ve given you XCSoar 6.4, we’ve just release the first maintenance version for the 6.4 branch. I’ve used 6.4 myself on two competitions last month and I was very happy with it. There were however a few minor things that were bugging me, so we’ve fixed them:

  • “Final GR” infobox is fixed
  • Flarm Team Colors are properly saved in the profile
  • Flarm targets are shown properly in the Map Item List
  • A few device drivers have been fixed
  • Bluetooth support for Windows CE is fixed/improved
  • Airspace arc resolution is improved (more on that later!)

You can read about the rest of the fixes in our change log:

XCSoar 6.4_beta2 released!
(28. Jul 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone,

here comes the second beta version of XCSoar 6.4. This version includes the bugfixes introduced by XCSoar 6.3.11 from earlier today and also some other fixes and improvements.

I’ve been flying at the german junior nationals with the first 6.4 beta version for over 24 hours now and I didn’t experience any major problems. Live tracking via SkyLines worked quite nice! This means that the release of XCSoar 6.4 is close and you can probably expect it some time next week.

XCSoar 6.3.11 released!
(28. Jul 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone,

since there were still a number of unfixed bugs in the stable branch of XCSoar, we’ve decided to publish yet another maintenance release before the launch of the new XCSoar 6.4.

There were some issues when keyhole sectors were used in racing tasks resulting in XCSoar not switching to the next waypoint automatically. A few other bugs were also fixed that could potentially freeze or crash the application or were responsible for rendering problems.

XCSoar 6.3.10 and 6.4_beta1 released!
(21. Jul 2012 by Max)

Hi,

Due to a task calculation bug, it was necessary to publish another maintenance release of XCSoar 6.3. Up to 6.3.9, the orientation of observation zones could be slightly wrong. Not much, but enough for a pilot to miss the finish line by a hundred metres.

XCSoar 6.3.9 released!
(18. Jul 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

Here comes one last maintenance release of the XCSoar 6.3 branch before we enter the beta-testing phase of the upcoming XCSoar 6.4. A small number of bugs were fixed in this release including one potential crash, when using custom “status files”. The airspeed parsing of the VW921 is fixed too, which was reading the values with the wrong units, due to a bug in the official documentation.

Unfortunately our old server has died completely in the meantime and the last backup was a few days old. If you feel that any tickets or comments are missing from the bug tracker please try to reproduce them. Our forum is still offline, but we are working on reviving it in the near future.

Bug tracker and forum status
(13. Jul 2012 by Max)

Hi,

as many of you may have noticed, our bug tracker and the forum are both still down. The server that has been hosting both has been riddled by hardware failures many times in the past months, and proved to be very unreliable.

This strikes us at a very inconvenient time, when XCSoar 6.4 beta testing is about to begin.

We have decided to get a new server at a more reliable hosting provider, and it is operational since yesterday. Problem is the backup I got is 2 weeks old, and I’m waiting for a recent backup (I hope there is one!). I hope this will be repaired completely until tomorrow.

XCSoar 6.4_alpha2 released!
( 6. Jul 2012 by Turbo)

Dear Sir or Madam,

we hereby present you: XCSoar 6.4… well… actually just the second alpha version, sorry! ;)

We have however added a few small new features that you can test now. Several people have been complaining that a simple “GoTo” takes too many clicks since the “Map Items” list was introduced. We have added a “GoTo” button directly in this list dialog now and hope that this will simplify things for you.

We have also improved the LX V7/Nano support again. This release of XCSoar will be able to work with the upcoming firmware update (2.01) for the LX V7, which makes it much easier to detect and configure the device that is providing the V7 with GPS information (e.g. the LX Nano).

We had slightly changed the audio vario sound parameters for the last release and some pilots had mixed feelings about that. This new version will let you configure them yourself through the usual configuration dialog.

There is one important change now for all users that have gotten used to the final glide infobox mode: We have made this mode optional and the default is now to disable it. That means that if you want a special set of infoboxes for the final glide you will have to activate that option explicitly after installing this release!

Aside from these new things a few bugs have been fixed. There was for example a problem in the first alpha version with waypoint files that included umlauts and other special characters. This should be fixed now!

SkyLines Live Tracking
(30. Jun 2012 by Max)

One major feature of XCSoar 6.4 will be SkyLines Live Tracking. I would like to introduce you to it.

SkyLines implements a very light-weight tracking protocol that transmits only 48 bytes for each fix, opposed to hundreds of bytes for other protocols. It works better when the connection is flaky (and it usually is in a glider!), because it does not require a complicated handshake between client and server. It transmits not only your position, but also altitude, speed, vario, engine noise level.

Due to these advantages, you can easily set the tracking interval to only a few seconds, and make the word “live” in “live tracking” credible.

The web interface is under heavy construction. We can always use some help developing it!

How to use:

This feature is only available on Android. You need an internet connection during the flight, so be sure to put your SIM card into your device. As soon as XCSoar detects take-off, it will transmit your location to the SkyLines server.

Take care, this transmits data over your mobile connection. This may cost you money. Be sure to have a data plan.

XCSoar 6.4_alpha1 released!
(28. Jun 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

Here comes the first preview version of XCSoar 6.4. While the Android users have had the chance to watch our progress for some time now, this first alpha release is also for the other platforms.

Here is a short overview of what has changed compared to XCSoar 6.3:

  • FLARM setup dialog
  • new GliderTools Altimeter and Compass C-Probe driver
  • improved LXNav V7 and Nano support and new setup dialog
  • configurable airspace rendering
  • “Airspace On/Off” button in the menu
  • METAR stations shown on the map
  • “dots for sink” trail styles (similar to Condor)
  • FLARM teammates are saved in the profile
  • configurable map item list
  • show screen gestures while drawing them
  • first iteration of a file download manager
  • automatic altitude and wind arrow infoboxes

and most important for our Android users that have devices with built-in barometric sensors:

  • audio vario output (only Android 2.3 and above)

But these are just the most prominent and visible changes, there were quite a few changes under the hood again to increase the stability of the application and to allow us to extend XCSoar even further. Please test this version and report any bugs that you might find, but keep in mind that this is an alpha version and we can’t guarantee that it is as stable as XCSoar 6.3 yet. I hope you like what we did and if you disagree, feel free to contribute to the project in any way that you can. That not only includes developing but also promotion, testing, translating and other things.

Note that Google Play counts only people using Android, without duplicates (if you have more than one Android phone/tablet), and of course excluding those who have a Windows CE/Mobile device. We have no idea how many users run XCSoar on Windows CE/Mobile.

XCSoar 6.3.7 released!
(22. Jun 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

Here comes yet another maintenance release for XCSoar 6.3. There are no major changes this time, but a few minor ones. Due to some hardware donations by LX Nav we were able to improve the support for the LX V7 vario and Nano logger.

The automatic crash detection works really nice now and we would like to thank all of our users that reported any crashes. Due to these submissions a crash in the METAR download code could be fixed in XCSoar 6.3.7. Users of the OLC League scoring were experiencing situations where the timeframe of the scoring exeeded the 2.5 hours, this is fixed too now.

XCSoar 6.4 is on its way and you can expect the start of the alpha testing phase in the next weeks. Android users can already have a look by using the testing version from the Google Play Store.

XCSoar 6.3.6 released!
( 6. Jun 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

Today we give you the sixth maintenance release for XCSoar 6.3. This release is all about the stability under the hood. There are almost no directly visible changes, but a lot has happend below the surface. IOIO users can once again take advantage of a few bugfixes that make the connection to the board more stable.

In the last release we have added automatic crash detection and logging for Android. We got a few negative comments on Google Play about the new requested user permission “Read personal logfiles” and we would like to assure you once again that XCSoar is only using this permission to access the crash logs. You can find the related code here. This is an important feature for us that already led to a few detailed bugreports and two bugfixes, that wouldn’t have been possible without it.

XCSoar 6.3.5 released!
(31. May 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

This is an important maintenance release for all Android users. From now on XCSoar will automatically save some debug information when it crashes. Aside from that, a few bugs were fixed:

  • Horizontal stripes in the terrain
  • Rounding errors in finish line optimization
  • Possible crashes during flight download
  • Hanging IOIO/Bluetooth connection

We would love to get some feedback on the last item. We got many reports on IOIO connections dropping out from time to time and we hope that this patch improves the situation.

XCSoar 6.4_preview5 released!
(24. May 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

We have just uploaded another preview version for all Android users. This version includes a first attempt of an audio vario. It works with pure GPS too but you will get the best results if you have a device with a built-in barometric sensor. Since not everyone needs this feature it is disabled by default. You can enable it by visiting the “Setup System” dialog on the “Gauges > Vario” page.

Feel free to tell us your opinion on this new feature!

Please note that this feature is only available on Android and the Unix version so far, and that this preview version is only released for the Android platform for now. While testing, please be aware that this is an experimental version and it might not be as stable as XCSoar 6.3.4 right now.

XCSoar 6.3.3 released!
( 5. May 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

Another week, another release. This new version fixes a few bugs that came up lately and tries to improve two known problems.

First of all we hopefully reduced the risk of XCSoar getting killed by the Android Activity Manager. And the new vario filtering that was introduced in XCSoar 6.3.2 was also rewritten and hopefully works even better now. Please give us feedback on those two items!

Besides these two there were several bugs fixed. In some cases XCSoar crashed on Android because it had too many network failures when trying to use the live tracking functionality. Another problem occured when using the IGC files for the OLC, because the “flat line” before takeoff was unfortunatly missing from the IGC files and due to that the OLC wasn’t able to detect the takeoff properly.

You can read about the other bugfixes in our changelog (now with ticket numbers !):

XCSoar 6.3.2 released!
(26. Apr 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

Just one week and we have yet another maintenance release for you. This release fixes a regression that got introduced in XCSoar 6.3.1. It should now be possible again to download IGC files from the Flarm and hopefully it will be even a bit more stable than before.

In addition to that we added a filter mechanism for Android devices that have a barometric sensor (for example the Samsung Galaxy Note). Until now the vario was quite jumpy even when the phone was not moving and the new filter should calm things down a bit. Please report back how well this is working out!

Hi everyone!

Three weeks ago we released the first stable version of XCSoar 6.3 and today we uploaded the first maintenance release that fixes quite a few bugs. This is also the first release with a dedicated version for 64 bit Windows computers.

Good news for users of the IOIO board: XCSoar will no longer freeze if you quit and don’t have the board connected. Good news also for users of older PDAs: No more unintentional double key presses. Under the hood we also fixed a few smaller bugs that lead to crashes, wrong calculations or problems with connected devices.

XCSoar 6.3_alpha3 released!
(25. Feb 2012 by Turbo)

Hi again!

Seems we are on a run today… This is the third alpha version of XCSoar 6.3. We are getting closer to the beta phase with every day and the stable version should be here by the start of the season. Please test this version as much as you can to identify any remaining problems.

This release has a few new features for you. Users of the K6BT module will love to hear that XCSoar is now able to switch the baudrate of the module directly. We have also improved the LX and Volkslogger device drivers. Previously the transfer connection to LX devices was timing out when in the flight list dialog. This problem should be fixed now. Our flight download code is still not quite as perfect as we wish it would be, but we are working on improving that!

If you notice that XCSoar doesn’t have support for your device yet (Zander ZS1 for example) please contact the manufacturer and ask them to cooperate with us by sending us the necessary documentation to implement these features.

XCSoar 6.3_alpha2 released!
(19. Feb 2012 by Turbo)

Hi everyone!

Here comes the second preview version of XCSoar 6.3. There have been a few rendering problems on Android and other problems on other platforms too, but we have fixed most of them.

In addition to that we have improved support for the LX devices lately with the LX MiniMap in particular. The additional hardware buttons should work as planned now.

Remember that this is still a potentially unstable alpha version. Test it as much as possible, but don’t rely on it completely yet. You should always have a stable backup version available.

Good news for Altair users:
Triadis have released their 07 Altair Firmware

http://triadis.triadis.biz/downloads/altair/update/

This allows you to run XCSoar.exe from the root of a USB Stick - making it easier to run XCSoar 6.x and try new versions.

Download XCSoarAltair.zip, uncompress and move/rename the file from ToAltair/XCSoarAltair-600-CRC3E.exe to the top of your USB disk as XCSoar.exe. Create an XCSoarData directory on your USB key and you’re pretty much done.

XCSoar 6.2.1 released!
(26. Sep 2011 by Turbo)

Hi everyone,

today we have released the first maintenance release of XCSoar 6.2. It fixes a few minor bugs and a bigger one on the Altair platform which made 6.2 unusable. All Altair owners with 6.2 should update to 6.2.1 to enable the rotary button again.

The other changes include update speed improvements for the METAR/TAF download feature and some bugfixes in particular for the Android platform.

Besides that we have focused on updating the manual for the 6.2 series. There is still a lot of work to do though and if you would like to contribute then please let us know. XCSoar 6.2_alpha3 released!

today we’ve released the third preview version of XCSoar 6.2. This version includes several smaller bugfixes including one miscalculation of airspace distances. The circling wind calculator that was broken in 6.2_alpha2 is working again. In addition to that John have developed a new wind algorithm that replaces the ZigZag mode. It should bring almost instant wind measurements if a device is connected that sends airspeed information to XCSoar.

XCSoar 6.2_alpha2 released!
( 1. Aug 2011 by Max Kellermann)

Hi,

here’s another preview version of XCSoar 6.2. There are dozens of major changes and optimisations since the first alpha. Perhaps the most important new feature is the new Android IOIO device driver some of you have been waiting for.

The CPU usage of the Android version has been reduced: on my Streak, it runs at 9% CPU usage (previously it was 40%). Look forward to longer battery runtime!

Altair+Vega users have better responsiveness of the vario gauge. We hope that all regressions since 5.2.4 have been fixed by now. The Vega configuration dialog is still broken, though, but one of our developers is working on that.

XCSoar 6.1.4 released!
(30. Jul 2011)

Hi everyone,

the fourth maintenance release of XCSoar 6.1 might be the last one before the 6.2 release, we hope.

Again, it reduces the memory usage, for smoother operation on PPC2000. The biggest change is an optimisation of the airspace renderer, which now runs twice as fast (on Windows). Altair users won’t see the screen upside down anymore.

XCSoar 6.2_alpha1 released!
(16. Jul 2011 by Max Kellermann)

Hi,

this is a preview for those who are curious what we’ve been doing behind the scenes. This is the first public pre-release of the upcoming XCSoar version 6.2.

My favorite new feature is the ability to download validated IGC files from external loggers (IMI ERIXX, CAI302 and LX/Colibri so far). I can finally dispose my old hx4700 now, which was only used to extract IGC files from my CAI302 with Cambridge’s Windows CE utility. Hooray for my liberating my Ventus from the evil Windows CE!

A lot of time has been spent on the map renderer. You won’t notice much of that, except for increased battery life.

And again, memory usage was optimised, which should help PPC2002 users. Those of you who run PPC2000: most PPC2000 can be upgraded to PPC2002. We had many debugging sessions, only to find that PPC2000 was buggy, and it wasn’t our fault.

There are other new features written by other people, but we havn’t written the change log yet. The Android IOIO driver isn’t finished yet, but will be included before the final release 6.2.

One last word of warning before you download this release: it’s an alpha version. It is untested and probably unstable. Test it, report bugs, but don’t complain this time - if you want reliable software, use the latest release from the 6.1 branch. You can have both installed at the same time.

XCSoar 6.1.3 released!
(14. Jul 2011)

Hi everyone,

the third maintenance release of XCSoar 6.1 has a lot of Android specific rendering fixes. Terrain display on the Samsung Galaxy S II and other modern chips works now. Triadis has sponsored a Galaxy S II for debugging - big thanks for the support!

Memory usage was reduced again, which should make PPC2000 and other Windows CE devices more smooth. The rest is mostly minor user interface and task engine fixes.

XCSoar Map Generator updated (again)
( 4. Jul 2011 by Turbo)

Once again we have updated our Map Generator with three new features:

  • Welt2000 Waypoints:
If you activate this option, your map file will contain all the waypoint from the Welt2000 waypoint database of the chosen area. The algorithm to determine the type of waypoint isn’t entirely perfected yet, but we are working on it. If you feel that some waypoints have the wrong type, please tell us!

  • Border around given waypoints:
When you gave us a waypoint file the generated background map stopped exactly at the last waypoint without any border or padding. Now we have added a fixed 15km padding for the cases where you provide the Map Generator with a waypoint file of yourself.

  • Google Terrain Maps:
The boundary chooser widget on the front page is now using the Google Maps API in Terrain mode instead of the old VMAP0 map.

XCSoar 6.1.2 released!

XCSoar Map Generator Update
(26. Jun 2011 by Turbo)

We have updated our Map Generator server today and that means some new features for everyone. Next to a few minor bugfixes there are three new major features:

  • SeeYou CUP:
Previously you have been able to pass a Cambridge/WinPilot DAT file to the Map Generator and it would compute the map boundaries automatically. The same works now too for SeeYou CUP files! If you choose this option the waypoint file will actually be embedded in the map file, so you don’t even have to load a seperate waypoint file anymore

  • Compressed topography:
Where size matters, compression is a useful thing, so we implemented a user option to enable compression for the topography data. The map file size will be reduced by around 60% when enabling this option, but keep in mind that in this case XCSoar needs to decompress the data while drawing the topography, which might lead to a slightly slower system.

  • Level of detail:
You may now choose how much topography features would like to have in your map. Depending on the population in you area it might make sense not to include every single village but only the big cities or in other areas exactly that data is needed because bigger cities are further away.

XCSoar 6.1.1 released!
( 3. Jun 2011)

Today we have released the first maintenance release of XCSoar 6.1.
It contains numerous fixes, most of them for the Altair and old PDAs (PPC2000).

Increased memory usage was responsible for crashes on both Altair and PPC2000. These devices have very small main memory, and new 6.1 features were too expensive for them. With some careful profiling, we could reduce the memory usage by several megabytes. We will optimise further in 6.1.2.
